Mental Health Answers

It’s everywhere you look. The subject of Mental Health is gaining more recognition than ever before.

The term “Mental Health” can cover a broad umbrella of areas, so for this article we’re going to look specifically at some mental illness/disorder questions and answers.
In our experience treating patients with mental health concerns, we find that most people are just looking for an explanation to better understand how their brain and emotions work together.
So, how much does science play into mental illness, vs. personal trauma and experiences? Are the mental issues people struggle with simply a chemical imbalance, a product of a trauma they’ve been through, or their environment? Could the answer be- yes to all?

If you find yourself asking these questions- you’re not alone. According to the National Library of Medicine, “Scientists estimate that one of every four people is affected by mental illness, either directly or indirectly.”
For years, we were told that mental illness was as a chemical imbalance in the brain. This hypothesis claimed depression, bipolar, and anxiety disorders developed from a [mis-firing] surplus or deficit of neurotransmitters in the brain- such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.
The most updated research, however, does not support chemical imbalance as a cause of mental health illness. Science has recently concluded that mental health conditions result from a myriad of factors including, not limited to:

  • Genetics
  • Family history of mental illness/disorders
  • Medications
  • Alcohol or illegal drugs
  • Trauma

Despite former claims of chemical imbalance being the primary cause of many mental disorders, it’s appearing to be more likely that other factors are involved.
The most current research shows that there are biological changes with mental illness that do not include a chemical brain imbalance; such as chronic stress, inflammation, diet, and toxins.

Medication and Mental Disorders

At Revive & Thrive, we are not licensed therapists. We do, however, understand science and how medications can work with your brain to help “stabilize” emotions, caused by mental health disorders.
(Note: medications are not a one-size-fits-all solution, and results do vary.)
Please keep in mind that not everyone that struggles with their mental health will benefit from medication- sometimes counseling can be a better solution.
Many of our patients have achieved a level of relief and comfort from certain medications that are designed to treat mental health issues; such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorders.
If you have questions about mental health concerns, or are seeking a diagnosis or medical treatment for a possible mental health disorder, we encourage you to seek help from a medical professional.
At Revive & Thrive Telehealth, we work with licensed professionals that we refer our patients to for counseling. For questions about mental health, medications, or to schedule a consultation for starting a treatment plan, please fill out the form below.
